Who needs an EORI number?

Without a valid EORI number, it is not possible to submit customs declarations or move goods within the EU.

Who does not need an EORI number?

Individual businesses and private individuals who buy or sell goods for personal use within the EU usually do not require an EORI number, as long as they submit written or electronic customs declarations less than ten times per year. However, companies engaged in foreign trade in the EU must possess an EORI number, even if they are directly represented by a service provider, such as a postal or express courier.

Each economic operator is allowed only one EORI number. Non-legal corporate divisions such as branches or operating sites may not have their own EORI number.

Application for an EORI number in Germany

Applying for an EORI number is free of charge in Germany and is carried out at the General Customs Directorate - Dresden office - Master Data Management. The process involves completing a form with your company details and a description of your business activities. The processing time for the application is generally 2-6 weeks.

Verification of the validity of an EORI number

The validity of an EORI number can be checked on the European Commission's website. It is advisable to regularly monitor this to avoid issues in handling customs formalities.
